#RCOServiceChallenge: Blood Donation

If you’ve never considered donating blood before now is the perfect time to start! While not everyone is eligible, those who are can change lives by donating. This post will walk you through how to find out if you’re eligible, how to book an appointment, and what to expect on the day.

Take the Eligibility Quiz
Canadian Blood Services has a short quiz that you can use to determine eligibility to donate. You can find it here: https://myaccount.blood.ca/en/eligibility-quiz I just did it and it only took my 2 minutes! However remember that even if the quiz says you can donate, final eligibility is always determined in person. You can also read through the comprehensive list of eligibility requirements here: https://www.blood.ca/en/blood/am-i-eligible/abcs-eligibility

Book an Appointment
You can book an appointment on the CBS website at blood.ca or on their mobile app. You will be prompted to make an account and then you’ll be able to see a list of clinics near you. Most clinics are set up for a day or two but Ottawa does have a permanent clinic 1575 Carling Ave. Normally they also accept walk-ins but during COVID-19 all donors must have an appointment.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
When you arrive you’ll fill out a questionnaire. Then, a nurse will go over the questionnaire with you and take your vitals in private. This is where final eligibility will be determined. If you’re eligible it’s then time to donate! If it’s your first time the staff member taking your blood will stay with you the whole time to make sure you’re feeling well. Depending on how fast your blood flows the donation takes between 5 and 20 minutes but after the initial needle goes it it is almost painless! Once you’re done they will give you a bandaid and bring you to the snack area. This is my favourite part! A volunteer will get you juice and offer you a snack to help replenish your body. And that’s it! Your first blood donation will be under your belt.Donating blood, for those who are eligible, is a tangible way to help others by only sacrificing your time (and your blood!). If you’ve been inspired to become a donor but are nervous to go alone or have more questions feel free to reach out to me.
